oBusiness & Marketing – 10 Tips for Reaching Your Customers Creatively
When you’ve been in business awhile, it’s easy to lose your creative drive, plateau, and stagnate using your tried and true marketing techniques. Even if you’re just starting out in business, it can be difficult to create unique marketing that helps your business stand out in the sea of entrepreneurs.
If your marketing is feeling blah, here are some tips for unique marketing to rekindle the creative flame and grab your audience’s attention:
- Try a social media platform you hadn’t considered for your business
Currently, biggest social media platforms are Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat, Instagram, and Pinterest. If you’re only using one or two of these, you’re missing out on new audiences! Social media is how we, as business owners, connect with our customers on a personal level. In addition to selling products, social media let’s us talk, inform, discuss.
Try a social media platform that you hadn’t considered before. Instagram is a great one because it can give personality to most businesses, not just creative ones. Take, for example, Passion Planner. At its heart, it’s just a black planner that allow business people to set goals, but the company has a fantastic Instagram presence @passionplanner
- Commit to talking to 3 strangers about your business this week
In the midst of social media, traditional advertising, and networking, sometimes talking to regular people about our business isn’t a priority. Regular people are our customers too and its very easy to forget that in our ever increasing digital presence!
Walking up to strangers and selling isn’t going to bring us many customers. So how do you talk to strangers about what you do? Talk to strangers in general. Talk to your barista, your uber driver, your cashier or someone at the gym. You have countless opportunities throughout the day to smile and strike up a conversation and If you can remember to try and talk to people, there’s a good chance, “What do you do for a living?” is going to come up eventually. Be genuine with the people you talk to. Use friendliness to get to know the community around you, then ask yourself how they can benefit from your services.
- Give your customers a unique and unexpected discount
One of my favorite things lately is seeing creative discounts on Facebook or in mailers. Recently, I saw an entrepreneur post a picture of their dog on Facebook with the message, “I love dogs! Post a picture of your dog in the comments for $5 off.”
Running creative discounts can help you market to really niche audiences, which is always more beneficial than just a wide range of people which most have no intention of hiring you for anything. How about a postcard with a coupon that gives a discount when a child comes along to pick out a piece of jewelry for their mom at your handmade jewelry business?
Or maybe you have a specific goal, like seeing more clients in the early morning. Offer an “early bird” discount for scheduling and appointment 8AM-10AM.
The possibilities for targeted marketing and achieving goals are endless.
- Join Facebook groups
Social media again! Sometimes I feel like I get paid to play on Facebook all day. The modern businesswomen know the importance of online marketing and a strong social presence.
Joining Facebook groups is a great way to network with other businesses and reach out to customers organically. You have to participate though! No one likes someone who joins a group just to sell themselves. This is the place to use your expertise to participate in discussions and showcase what you offer that no one else does.
- Create a Facebook group
Some say that the Facebook business page is dead. Instead, Facebook groups for business are on the rise. Facebook groups are amazing because instead of talking at your customers, you are talking to them. In fact, you’re letting them into your circle and listening to what they think, need, and respond to. Cultivating an active online group opens the doors wide for market research, promoting new products, and receiving honest feedback. More importantly, it gives your business a soul, a personality that resonates with the people you’re serving through your business.
- Give your business a face using hash-tags and photos
I’m big on businesses that are real people connecting with real customers, if you haven’t noticed, faceless businesses are a thing of the past, and authenticity to connect with your customers is in.within businesses, t connect with their customers are in. If you’re not interacting with your market yet, it’s time to start!
One of my favorite ways to connect with our audience is through photos and hash-tags that give a behind-the-scenes glimpse into our business and the people who work here. Join in popular hash-tags like #ThrowbackThursday (aka #TBT) or #selfiesaturday. If you don’t want to post pictures of yourself or your team members, showcase some gorgeous photos of your products with #pursuepretty or say something about your values with #dowhatyoulove. Feeling like a lady boss today? Try #girlboss or #solopreneur.
Many of these hashtags are also popular on Twitter. If you’re not sure which hashtags are best for your business, take a second and Google “best hashtags for (your industry).
- Create a business card that is unexpected and contains a call to action
Business cards don’t always have to be a rectangle with your contact info on it. There are squares and circles, embossed cards, photo cards, and cards made from lightweight metal andIf those ideas seem a little too unique, design a colorful card that matches your business’ brand. Definitely include a logo, if you have one.
Telling people how to contact you on your business card isn’t enough though so make sure to tell them why they should contact you. That might be as simple as printing something like Visit my blog or Call for a free consultation on your card. You could get even more creative. Ask me how I can be the best part of your day. - Go for coffee with one person you think can be a game changer for your business
Sometimes marketing isn’t a matter of reaching lots of people, but a matter of reaching the right ones. Invite someone—a client, customer, or another business owner—to coffee and talk about how you can help each other. What do you have to offer?
- Stop talking about what you do and start asking them what they need
Selling doesn’t happen in a vacuum so try to encourage feedback and learn more about what your customers want and need from your company. People want to be heard, so start listening.
Unique marketing doesn’t have to be hard so If you want to be seen and heard in the crowd, all you have to do is exercise a little creativity. Most importantly, you need to think about how you can reach out and give back to other people before you consider how marketing benefits you.
